This is bad that it has taken me a year to come back to wordpress. i got busy!
2010 was my busiest year. I completed university this year, so there was a few long months of head in books. Then on completing uni I ended up working for the next six months, this is my second weekend I’ve had off working in a long time. Clearing out a lot of my past is very cleansing!

I’m optimistic for 2011. no need for resolutions this year, i’m looking at goals which will enhance my life.
There were many goodbyes in 2010, so 2011 is all about new starts. New job, trying to get to my dream city, new faces.

i’d be more excited about what 2010 will bring if i hadnt been bedridden for 4 days. it’s the big year for me because i graduate, and i can do anything after uni. it doesn’t help that i’m a dreamy girl so the possibilities after uni are endless.

insomnia, cough syrup and my current daydreaming has compiled the following:

• brighton as that is where my heart is, a life by the sea, record shops and vegan cafes
• london – my friends currently in london having interviews, if she gets the job she said we could share a place after i graduate. london would be a good place to be for what i’m wanting to do, specially if i decide to intern for a while instead
• birmingham, because it’s not too far from home.. this is my backup if im scared of the big world option
• i want to travel before i get stuck in a 9-5 job; america, france, back to amsterdam, more of europe, japan
• or something i have not yet expected

2010 plans/resolutions:

• taken from RHPS: dont dream it, be it daydreaming is all well and good but aim to find work and a new home
• work hard, uni’s almost over so there’s no second chances anymore.
• stop giving people second, third chances when you know that they are going to disappoint you again and again
• talk to people. my confidence has soared in the past few years but i hold the important things back, which is how things got complicated over christmas, speak honestly.

• I have tickets to Reading Festival 2010! Me and friends decided to buy them now (also means no droppings out, hopefully) i’m really excited and i have to wait a year. This years had a great line-up, but ended up having to sell on my ticket so regardless of the line-up i am very excited and hopefully get a good bunch of friends down!

• Family roadtrips. I was expecting disaster, Little Miss Sunshine disasters with five of us crammed into the car. But was a fun day out, meeting with the rest of the family, and finding an old photograph album. Including  my dad and his relatives. Literally in hysterics over his baby photos, much to his annoyance :]

• Travelling at night, rain on the windows, surrounded by family. I find this one of the best feelings is being in a car, watching the world go by, the sound of rain on the windows..

write poetry, sing, dance, play an instrument, take pictures of beautiful sunsets, make art, draw, paint, go to karaoke, travel everywhere, be smart, live in a dream, kiss beautiful girls, stand above the clouds, fly, run in the snow, bask in the sun, time travel, not get older, find the most perfect place on earth, find the most perfect place off earth, sleep more, sleep less, wake up with the sunrise, make friends, make music, listen to music every second of every day, act, get lost, be less scared.

What I am trying to understand is how we have ended up here.. We’ve somehow been lead to think a life consists of spending, watching tv, reading gossip magazines, spending more money on things we’re told to buy, listen to trends, buying to fit into trends, watching tv, eating junk food etc etc. And this should be a satisfying life to lead? NO.  What i think is that our generation has become spoilt, there is so much out there trying to grab our attention, and we get easily distracted be it. We buy into it. Even if we try we can’t avoid it most of the time, things can make little hooks into our heads unconsciously. We start to associate products with songs, products to get a girlfriend, products with happiness. Products own us. This is our generation, the image obsessed generation, the generation of products. It applies to music, and tv, and even how individuals present themselves. All this feeding is actually keeping us in line and we don’t even realise it.

My friend said how their mum was talking about back in the 70′s/80′s there was the celebrity talk such as The Beatles and other big names. But not at the scale it is these days, the average Joe can become a celebrity on some level, whether it be through knowing celebrities and stories getting pressed of pictures of them getting drunk a lot, or through online sites they have gained some kind of status.

I hate the celebrity obsessed nation. It’s dumbing us down.

I think a good example of this, is the current Iran news. There was plenty of coverage around the protests and what was going on around June, however also around the time Michael Jackson died. And then coverage on Iran news went out the window and the news programmes were hours decided to MJ, i had to go out of my way to find out what was going on in Iran! Yes Michael Jackson has made some good music, and inspired many artists, but he is also one single person. In Iran there were hundreds of people dying, still are! Maybe it is just too hard for people to comprehend hundreds of deaths they have no connection to, then one man who they heard about a lot. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of MJ fans were brought together to mourn this death, pay their respects, which was nice yes. But you don’t get the same reaction when there is something obviously wrong going on in the world..?

Why does our generation sit back and let things happen and complain after?? Why has everyone become complacent, and think well i don’t see why i should get up off my seat as it won’t make any difference, i’m only one person. Is this what our forefathers thought? Martin Luther? No. It’s so much easier to just let it happen, and complain about why everythings messed up isn’t it.

A good example in the UK was with the recent elections. I knew people which complained about BNP, yet never voted! Don’t complain unless you atleast tried..

People seem more interested in gossip magazines then world news. Even books generally, i have a friend who doesn’t read, ever. This kills me, how can you go through life not wishing to further your mind? We have a world of knowledge at our fingertips (hello internet) and still people can just sit and play about on facebook, rather then expand their mind. One of my new years resolutions this year was the pay attention to the news, and i definitely have paid more attention to it, though i admit i don’t understand a lot of politics, but i wish i did.. if we didn’t have 24/7 digital channels, and the internet maybe people would partake in the real world more. It just feels as though within our generation everythings been dumbed down. Magazines have replaced literature and expanding the mind, we get bored far too easily because there’s too many things wanting our attention!

It’s almost want to shield themselves from whats actually going on. So lets go buy more products which will never ultimately make us happy, maybe for a bit, but it is a product at the core. It goes with individual image too, bands all have this image they need to sell, and journalism rarely covers what their philosophies are, people fall into trends fairly easily too.

At the end of the day, stay true to yourself, do what makes you happy. But just think more, am i doing this because i want too, or i am being led to believe this is what will make me happy.

My advice is to try and not live in the box thats being cut out for us.

Put down that magazine on Jordans love life, really how it is benefitting your life, start visiting the library, choose books outside your usual subject, carry books and notebooks around with you and appreciate the world around you, take off your headphones and talk to people around you, be cultural, explore, travel often, support your local record shop/local coffeehouse, speak your mind, be daring, always strive to better yourself! learn, live, love.

- rediscovering black clothing (not that i ever stopped wearing them ;D) – simple ways to look effortless good. two cardigans which make me feel like i’ve a cape, and a top which makes me feel like an eighties girl.

- lying in the park watching the stars with a boy at a random morning hour.

- making plans to go to Stonehenge to celebrate the autumn equinox with my friend!

- being given a stack of books to sink into :]

I think more people should do this, it always makes me smile that people are passionate enough to confidently hum or sing a song while in their own world, to the world around them. It was only by chance that i decided not to put my headphones for that walk or i would have missed this. What i would like to do is have everyone take off their headphones for a day and just hum and sing their favourite tunes instead, could you imagine how magical and fun it would be if everyone just walked about singing what was in their head instead! I find that having headphones on instantly cuts you off from other people, and the world around you, which is why i’m trying not to use mine as much. Recently i’ve met some lovely people by chance, at times where i’ve purposedly left my iPod at home.

Sometimes i think it would be more fun if life was a musical (can hear the intake of shock from my housemates).
